The Roman Theatre of Amiternum is the ruin of an ancient performance venue at the archaeological site of Amiternum in Abruzzo, Italy, dating to the Roman Republican-Imperial era. It is one of the surviving public buildings from the Roman town of Amiternum.
Visitors see exposed sections of the theatre’s cavea (seating area) and the orchestra, with masonry that shows typical Roman construction techniques. The remains are presented as part of the archaeological area rather than a fully reconstructed venue, so interest is mainly archaeological and architectural.
Built during the Roman period for public performances and civic events, the theatre fell out of use during the later Roman and medieval periods and was subsequently buried or quarried for materials. Archaeological excavations and surveys in the 19th and 20th centuries identified and mapped the remaining structures.
The site sits in the Abruzzo region near the modern city of L’Aquila and is part of the greater Amiternum archaeological area. It is set within inland hilly terrain typical of central Italy and is accessible from L’Aquila and surrounding towns.
