Roman Theatre (Cartagena)
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman theatre restored within Cartagena's historic quarter
1st-century BC Roman theatre in Cartagena’s historic centre with an on-site museum; visitors explore restored seating, the stage area and adjacent archaeological park.
The Roman Theatre of Cartagena is a Roman-era theatre complex in the historic centre of Cartagena, Region of Murcia, built in the late 1st century BC to the early 1st century AD. It is one of Spain’s most important Roman urban theatres and is displayed alongside a purpose-built museum.
The exposed ruins include the semicircular seating area (cavea), the orchestra and the remains of the stage building; these are presented in situ with sheltered walkways that allow close inspection of masonry and decorative fragments. The adjoining Museo del Teatro Romano displays sculptures, inscriptions and finds recovered during excavation and provides an interpretation route linking streets above the site to the ruins below.
The museum building itself is a point of interest for its modern architecture and how it integrates with the archaeological remains; it contains explanatory displays and conserved artefacts from the Roman city of Carthago Nova. Visitors often combine a site visit with a walk through Cartagena’s historic centre and nearby archaeological points.
Constructed in the late Republican to early Imperial period, the theatre served as a civic entertainment venue in Roman Carthago Nova. It fell out of use in late antiquity and was later buried beneath subsequent urban development until its re-discovery in 1988 and later excavation and conservation.
Sited in central Cartagena, the theatre and its museum sit within the historic core of the city in the Region of Murcia, close to other archaeological sites and municipal buildings, making it easily reachable on foot from Cartagena’s central plazas.
- Discovery and museum: Discovered during urban excavations in 1988 and subsequently excavated and conserved, the site is presented together with an adjacent museum designed by architect Rafael Moneo.
- Visitor access: The archaeological site is compact and accessible by a museum ticket that includes raised walkways offering close views of the stage area and seating levels.
