The Roman amphitheatre of Syracuse is an ancient Roman entertainment structure located in Syracuse on the island of Sicily, Italy. It is situated within the Neapolis archaeological area near other major classical monuments.
The structure consists of a partially rock-cut arena with surviving sections of seating, passageways, and service areas typical of Roman amphitheatres. Visitors come to view the carved stone architecture and to see how the Roman phase of Syracuse adapted and reused the local bedrock and earlier Hellenistic structures.
The amphitheatre was constructed during the Roman period and later experienced phases of alteration and stone-robbing for building materials in subsequent centuries. Over time it fell out of use and was progressively buried and incorporated into the urban and agricultural fabric before archaeological excavation revealed its layout.
Sitting on the eastern coast of Sicily, the amphitheatre lies within walking distance of Syracuse’s historic center and is part of the larger heritage site that includes the Greek theatre and Roman-era remains.
- Setting: located within the archaeological area of Neapolis in Syracuse, adjacent to the Greek theatre and other classical remains.
- Construction: visible features include carved stone seating and sections cut into bedrock that indicate Roman construction techniques and later re-use of materials.
