Roman Agora
Plaza Ancient Athenian marketplace with Hellenistic ruins
Near Monastiraki, the Roman Agora preserves Hellenistic and Roman market ruins including the Tower of the Winds; visitors study the pillars, nearby museums and the shortcut between the Acropolis and Plaka.
The Roman Agora in Athens is a Roman-period public square and marketplace located north of the Acropolis. It was constructed during the Roman era and contains several well-preserved monuments from that period.
The site’s principal visible features include the octagonal Tower of the Winds, an ancient horologion used for timekeeping, and the Gate of Athena Archegetis, which marks a formal entrance to the square. The compact archaeological area yields clear Roman-era architectural remains and is often visited in conjunction with nearby Plaka and Monastiraki.
Built in the Roman period to serve as a civic and commercial centre, the Roman Agora replaced or supplemented earlier Greek marketplace functions in Athens. Over time the complex underwent repairs and changes in use through Byzantine and later periods, with excavations uncovering the layout and surviving monuments.
Located immediately north of the Acropolis in central Athens, the Roman Agora sits within the Plaka/Monastiraki district and is within easy walking distance of the city’s main archaeological sites and public transport hubs.
- Access and setting: The complex sits immediately north of the Acropolis and is accessible on foot from Monastiraki Square and the Plaka neighbourhood; modest on-site remains are concentrated within a compact archaeological area.
What to See #
- Tower of the Winds: The Tower of the Winds is an octagonal ancient horologion standing within the Roman Agora, built of marble and known for its carved wind deities and astronomical function.
- Gate of Athena Archegetis: The Gate of Athena Archegetis forms the classical entrance to the square and dates to the Roman period, framing the northern edge of the site.
How to Get to Roman Agora #
The Roman Agora is in central Athens’ Plaka district beside Adrianou Street, about a 3-5 minute walk (roughly 200-300 m) from Monastiraki metro station (served by Metro Line 1/Green and Line 3/Blue). From Syntagma Square it’s about 1.5-2 km (a short drive or a 20-25 minute walk) via Adrianou and the pedestrian streets of the historic centre.
Tips for Visiting Roman Agora #
- Visit right at opening or late afternoon to avoid the busiest hours around Monastiraki and to see the site in cooler light; the Roman Agora sits just north of Monastiraki square so use the Adrianou/Monastiraki side entrance and the nearby Monastiraki metro stop for the shortest walk.
- Don't skip the Tower of the Winds inside the Roman Agora - it's the best-preserved structure on-site and often overlooked by visitors who only linger on the open market area.
- Combine a short stop here with the nearby Ancient Agora and the Acropolis area on the same morning or late afternoon to space out crowds rather than trying to see everything at once.
Best Time to Visit Roman Agora #
Visit the Roman Agora in spring or autumn for mild weather and smaller crowds; avoid the heat and peak summer crowds when possible.
