The area has a record of Aboriginal occupation visible in shell middens and other archaeological features along the coast. European use has included recreation and coastal access, with the area later designated for conservation.

Rocky Cape National Park is on Tasmania’s northwest coast, roughly 35 km west of Wynyard and 50 km east of Smithton via the Bass Highway (A2). The park has signed access points from Rocky Cape Road; a car is the most practical way to reach trailheads and picnic areas.

- Bring binoculars: the cape offers one of Tasmania's more reliable shore-based seabird viewing points, including shearwaters near the cliffs.
