Río Abiseo National Park is a large, remote protected area in northern Peru that conserves montane rainforest, cloud forest and important archaeological sites. The park is internationally recognized for its biodiversity and for containing pre-Columbian archaeological remains in a largely undisturbed forest setting.

The park combines dense forest, steep canyon landscapes and isolated archaeological ruins attributable to pre-Inca cultures. Trails and river corridors link dispersed archaeological complexes and natural features, but most areas are difficult to reach and are visited mainly by researchers and guided expeditions.

Because of its remoteness and sensitivity, the park has limited visitor infrastructure and only a small number of authorised visits each year. Interpretive information is available through research reports and controlled guided trips rather than large-scale tourism facilities.

The park protects both ecological communities and archaeological sites that document human occupation of the eastern Andean slopes before European contact. Archaeological finds demonstrate complex pre-Columbian ritual and settlement activities within the forested interior.

Situated in the eastern Andean foothills of northern Peru within Cajamarca Department, the park occupies steep river valleys and headwaters that feed larger Amazon tributaries.

  • Restricted access: Access is highly restricted; visits require official permits because of the site's ecological sensitivity and cultural protection measures.
