Rieserferner Group
Mountains Alpine massif on Italy-Austria border, glaciated peaks
A high mountain group on the Italy-Austria border, the Rieserferner contains glaciated peaks, steep ridges and marked alpine routes within the Rieserferner‑Ahrn nature park; visitors come for mountaineering and backcountry hiking.
The Rieserferner Group is a subrange of the Central Eastern Alps located in northern Italy’s Trentino‑Alto Adige/Südtirol region; it contains rugged, high‑alpine terrain and glacial cirques. The range is largely included within the Rieserferner‑Ahrn Nature Park, which manages access and conservation of the area.
Alpine walkers and mountaineers use a network of marked trails, refuges and climbing routes to access peaks and glacier basins; terrain ranges from steep talus and rocky ridges to glacierised valleys, so route difficulty varies considerably. The area is valued for its alpine scenery, mountain hiking and opportunities to reach summits above 3,000 metres.
Geographically the group sits along the border area between the Puster and Ahrntal valleys in the eastern Alps, in the northern part of Italy’s South Tyrol province and adjacent to Austrian Tyrol across the main alpine crest. The landscape is typical high mountain country with steep valleys, rocky ridges and permanent snow at altitude.
- Alpine elevations: Many summits in the group exceed 3,000 metres and host remnants of glaciers and permanent snowfields, so conditions remain alpine even in summer.
What to See #
- Rieserferner‑Ahrn Nature Park: Rieserferner‑Ahrn Nature Park protects much of the group and its high‑alpine terrain, glaciers and cirques; the park is the main managed access area for trails and refuges.
- High peaks and glacial cirques: High mountain massif and glacier cirques that include multiple summits rising above 3,000 metres and steep, glaciated valleys used for alpine climbing and mountaineering.
How to Get to Rieserferner Group #

From these centers drive or take regional buses toward Sand in Taufers (Campo Tures) and smaller valley roads leading to trailheads-check local maps for specific refuges and routes.
Tips for Visiting Rieserferner Group #
- If hiking, start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms in alpine areas; carry a detailed map and a reliable GPS-mobile reception can be patchy.
- Visit the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park information centers for trail conditions and glacier safety advice.
- Look for the red dot trail markers used in South Tyrol marking high alpine routes; many summits require sure-footedness and some scrambling.
