Residenzplatz is a principal Baroque square in the historic centre of Salzburg, Austria, flanked by the prince-archbishop’s palace and Salzburg Cathedral. It functions as a central public space and tourist focal point within the old town.
The square was laid out in the Baroque period as part of urban redevelopment around the cathedral and episcopal palace. Monumental architecture and decorative elements installed from the 17th century established the square’s present appearance and civic function.
Positioned in Salzburg’s Altstadt, Residenzplatz sits beside Salzburg Cathedral and the Residenz palace, within walking distance of the Salzach river and other central landmarks such as Mozartplatz and Getreidegasse.

Residenzplatz is in Salzburg’s Altstadt (Old Town), a short walk from Mirabellplatz and Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station). The pedestrian zone makes it easiest to arrive on foot from nearby landmarks (Mozartplatz, Getreidegasse). Local buses also serve the old town.
