Reschensee
Lake Alpine reservoir with submerged 14th-century church tower
At Lake Reschensee in South Tyrol, a 14th-century church bell tower rises from the water; visitors stop for photographs, alpine hikes, windsurfing on the lake and drives across the Reschen Pass.
Reschensee (Lago di Resia / Resia Lake) is an artificial Alpine reservoir in South Tyrol, Italy, notable for a 14th-century church bell tower that protrudes above the lake surface. The reservoir was created in the mid-20th century and the exposed tower is a widely recognised landmark in the region.
The sunken tower is a popular photographic subject and the surrounding lake offers windsurfing and boating in summer; in winter the lake frequently freezes and the tower can be reached on foot when conditions are safe. Lakeshore roads and viewpoints give easy visual access to the tower and the surrounding mountain scenery.
The reservoir formed when local valleys were dammed, which flooded earlier settlements and left the medieval tower as the most visible remnant. The tower itself dates to the medieval period and belonged to a village church that predates the reservoir.
The lake lies in the upper Vinschgau/Val Venosta area near the Reschen Pass on the border triangle with Austria and Switzerland, in the mountainous northwestern part of South Tyrol.
- Elevation: Reservoir surface sits at about 1,498 metres above sea level, creating an Alpine setting where the medieval tower is visible above the water.
- Reservoir creation and landmark: The valley was flooded to create a hydroelectric reservoir in the mid-20th century; the partially submerged tower of the former village church is the lake's most recognisable feature.
What to See #
- Submerged church bell tower: A 14th-century church tower that protrudes from the lake surface after the valley was flooded to create the reservoir; the tower is the best-known visual symbol of the lake.
- Lakeshore villages and viewpoints: The shoreline settlements that were affected when the reservoir was formed and the lakeside paths and viewpoints used by visitors for close views of the tower.
- Recreation routes and water-sport areas: Trails and open-water areas used for seasonal activities including windsurfing in summer and walking or ice crossings in winter when the lake freezes.
How to Get to Reschensee #
Reschensee (Lago di Resia) sits at the Reschen Pass in South Tyrol (Trentino-Alto Adige). By car follow the main valley road up the Vinschgau/Val Venosta from the direction of Mals/Malles or from the Austrian side and follow signs for Resia/Reschen; there is parking at the lake and only a short walk from the roadside to the famous submerged bell‑tower viewpoint. You can also take the regional Vinschgau railway (Merano-Mals) to Mals (Malles) and then a local bus or short taxi ride to the lake.
Tips for Visiting Reschensee #
- Plan for early morning or late evening light-sunrise and sunset produce the strongest reflections of the submerged church tower and quieter conditions for photography.
- Head to the village of Curon/Graun on the lake's shore for the classic close-up views; the road along the northern shore also offers several roadside pull-offs with wide perspectives of the tower and surrounding mountains.
- Winter scenes are striking (the tower rising from ice and snow), but crowds peak in summer-visit in shoulder seasons or early weekdays to avoid tourist buses and get cleaner sightlines.
Best Time to Visit Reschensee #
Best visited in summer (June-August) for hiking and lake activities, or in winter for snowy alpine scenery if you want a quieter, wintry visit.
