Requena-Utiel

Requena-Utiel is an inland comarca in the Valencian Community of eastern Spain, centred on the towns of Requena and Utiel. The area is a prominent wine-producing district and gives its name to the Utiel-Requena wine region.

The comarca is characterised by extensive vineyards and a network of bodegas where visitors sample local wines; many wineries offer tours and tastings, especially during the autumn harvest. Requena has a compact medieval old town on a hill with narrow streets and historic cellars carved into the rock, while Utiel functions as the principal service and transport centre for the area.

The towns in the comarca developed through the medieval and early modern periods as agricultural and market centres; viticulture expanded over centuries and the modern wine industry became a defining economic activity of the region. Traditional underground wine cellars and rural architecture reflect long-standing local practices in grape growing and wine storage.

Situated inland in the western part of the Valencian province, the comarca lies roughly 60-80 kilometres west of the city of Valencia and occupies rolling terrain of vineyards and farmland between the Iberian System foothills and the Júcar river basin.

• Best time to visit: Harvest and wine festivals in September and October are the main seasonal attractions when wineries open for tours and tastings.
• Local grape variety: The local red grape variety Bobal is a defining feature of the region's wines and is widely planted across the vineyards.
