Rembrandt House Museum

The Rembrandt House Museum occupies the 17th-century house where Rembrandt van Rijn lived and worked during the peak of his career in Amsterdam. The site is presented as a historic house museum with reconstructed period rooms, a working studio interpretation and displays of prints and etchings.

Exhibits focus on Rembrandt’s etchings and on the material culture of a 17th-century artist’s household, combining original items, period fittings and copies made for display. The museum runs educational programmes and demonstrations of etching technique.

Rembrandt purchased and moved into the house in 1639 and lived there through the 1640s into the mid-1650s; financial difficulties later forced him to leave. The building has since been restored and adapted to display the artist’s life and work.

Located on a central canal-side street in Amsterdam, the house lies close to the Waterlooplein area and other historic sites in the old city.
