Reiter Alpe
Mountains Karstic mountain group on the Bavarian–Austrian border
Along the Berchtesgaden Alps’ crest, the Reiter Alpe offers limestone ridges; hikers and via‑ferrata climbers use alpine huts and steep trails.
The Reiter Alpe is a limestone mountain ridge in the Northern Limestone Alps within the Berchtesgaden/Salzburg region, notable for steep cliffs and a cluster of peaks rising above 2,000 metres. The massif is a compact, rugged set of summits popular with hikers and mountaineers.
The Reiter Alpe is part of the Northern Limestone Alps and formed by the uplift and erosion of marine sedimentary rock over geological time, producing steep karst cliffs and steep faces. Traditional alpine uses have been grazing in lower pastures and mountaineering from the 19th century onward.
The ridge lies on the border area between Austria and Germany within the Berchtesgaden/Salzburg mountain region, set among high valleys and alpine basins. It is accessed from mountain villages at the foot of the range and is within driving distance of Salzburg and Berchtesgaden.
- Season and routes: Most routes are alpine hikes or easy climbs on limestone; the main season for access is late spring to early autumn when snow has melted from the ridges.
What to See #
- Stadelhorn (peak): Stadelhorn, the highest summit of the ridge, reaches about 2,286 metres and is the most frequently climbed peak in the group.
