Reichenau Island is a long inhabited island in Lake Constance (Bodensee) in southern Germany, renowned for its early medieval monastic complex and cultural landscape. Its monastery, founded in the early 8th century, became a significant centre of learning and manuscript production.

Visitors focus on the island’s Romanesque churches with surviving medieval frescoes, the former abbey precinct and the cultivated vegetable gardens that continue a long tradition of island agriculture. The ensemble is recognised for its integrated cultural and natural landscape and for the high quality of its preserved medieval architecture.

The Benedictine community established the abbey in the early 700s; across the Middle Ages the monastery exerted wide religious and cultural influence in the region before secularisation. Archaeological and architectural remains document its medieval role.

Reichenau lies in the southern part of Lake Constance near the city of Konstanz and is connected to the mainland by a causeway; the island is approximately 4 to 5 kilometres in length and accessible by road.

  • Founding and UNESCO status: Founded around 724, the abbey made the island an influential religious and cultural centre in the early medieval period; it is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its Benedictine monastic ensemble.

What to See #

  • Abbey church and monastic churches: The monastic ensemble includes the abbey church (Münster) and several small Romanesque churches decorated with medieval frescoes, which formed the island's religious centre.
