Regia
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman royal office and religious center
Regia refers to archaeological remains in the Roman Forum once linked to ancient civic rituals; visitors encounter excavated foundations while touring the Forum’s layers of Roman history.
The Regia is an ancient building site in the Roman Forum of Rome, traditionally associated with the residence and administrative center of early Roman kings and later with the College of Pontiffs. Its surviving remains are part of the Roman Forum archaeological complex near the Temple of Vesta and the House of the Vestal Virgins.
Excavated remains include a rectangular structure with internal partitions and traces of rebuilding; visible masonry belongs mainly to late Republican and early Imperial phases. The site is compact and typically visited as part of a wider tour of the Forum rather than as a standalone attraction.
Ancient sources describe the Regia as the headquarters of Rome’s kingly and later priestly functions; archaeological work shows multiple construction phases and repairs reflecting reuse from the monarchy period through the Imperial era. The building underwent reconstructions in the late Republic and early Empire, leaving the heavier stonework visible today.
The Regia sits within the Roman Forum in central Rome, Lazio, immediately southeast of the Temple of Vesta and close to the Capitoline Hill. It is within walking distance of the Colosseum and other major archaeological sites in central Rome.

Tips for Visiting Regia #
- Visit first thing in the morning to avoid peak crowds in the Roman Forum and to get unobstructed views of ruins like the Regia in softer light.
- Buy a combined Colosseum/Palatine/Forum ticket and enter via the Colosseum or Palatine access points - this saves time and gives legal access to the Forum area where the Regia stands.
- Use a guide or a focused guidebook/audio guide to interpret the site: the Regia is a small, fragmentary building and its significance is easy to miss without background on its role in ancient Rome.
