Red Crater

Crater Volcanic crater on Tongariro plateau

Along Tongariro’s alpine route, Red Crater sits above emerald lakes and volcanic rock; day‑hikers tackle the Tongariro Alpine Crossing to reach its red‑hued summit and stark, volcanic terrain.

Main image

Red Crater is a volcanic crater on the southern slopes of Mount Tongariro in Tongariro National Park on New Zealand’s North Island. It is a prominent feature on the alpine route and is notable for its red scoria and ash slopes.

The crater forms the highest point on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a popular one-way trek of roughly 19 kilometres that crosses volcanic terrain. Hikers encounter bright red volcanic rock, expansive views over nearby peaks, and the vivid Emerald Lakes set in adjacent craters.

Red Crater is part of the Tongariro volcanic complex within the Taupo Volcanic Zone and was produced by strombolian and explosive eruptions that deposited scoria and ash around the vent. The landscape has been shaped by ongoing volcanic activity in the area rather than by human construction.

The crater sits in central North Island within Tongariro National Park on Mount Tongariro’s summit plateau. The nearest settlement and visitor facilities are at the Whakapapa and National Park Village areas on the northern slopes of the park.

  • Elevation: Sits at the high point of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, reaching around 1,886 metres above sea level and forming the crossing's steepest section.
  • Access and conditions: Best visited in summer when the Alpine Crossing is most commonly walked; weather can change rapidly and the route is exposed for several kilometres.

What to See #

  • Emerald Lakes: Located immediately to the southwest of the crater rim, these three intensely colored lakes occupy depressions formed by past eruptions and are accessible on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing route.

How to Get to Red Crater #

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing trailhead at Mangatepopo car park is accessed from State Highway 47. Most walkers do a shuttle from Rotorua, Taupō or Turangi to the start or end points; commercial shuttle services run daily during the main season and must be booked in advance.

Tips for Visiting Red Crater #

  • If doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing that passes Red Crater, start early-begin before first light to avoid afternoon cloud and to secure a shuttle back from Ketetahi or Whakapapa.
  • In winter and shoulder months hire an alpine guide and carry crampons/ice axe; the ridge can be extremely exposed and weather changes quickly.
  • Bring sun protection and expect a sulphur smell around Red Crater-its colours come from volcanic mineralization, not paint.

Best Time to Visit Red Crater #

Best visited in the Southern Hemisphere summer months (November-April) for safer conditions; winter requires mountaineering equipment and experience.

Summer
November-April · 5-20°C (41-68°F) lower elevations; colder on the ridge
Longest daylight and generally the best weather for the full crossing-still expect wind.
Winter
May-October · -10 to 5°C (14-41°F)
Snow and ice make the crossing hazardous; only attempt with proper gear and guides.
