Rathfarnham Castle

Rathfarnham Castle is a fortified tower house and country residence in the suburb of Rathfarnham on the south side of Dublin. The core tower is an Elizabethan-era fortified house dating to 1583 and the complex includes later extensions and gardened grounds.

The site highlights an Elizabethan tower house with later domestic wings, exhibition rooms that interpret the building’s history and public gardens around the castle. The structure is used for public visits, exhibitions and community events.

The castle was built in 1583 by Adam Loftus and served as a fortified residence; it underwent alterations and expansion in subsequent centuries as military needs declined and domestic use increased. The building has been restored in the 20th and 21st centuries and is presented as a historic house open to visitors.
