Rarotonga is the most populous island of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific and serves as the political and economic centre of the country. The island has a volcanic interior with steep slopes and a surrounding coral reef and lagoon.

The interior is dominated by a central ridge with peaks such as Te Manga at about 652 metres, while a coastal road of roughly 32 kilometres links villages, resorts and beaches around the island. The main settlement and administrative centre is Avarua on the north coast, which contains the principal port and services for visitors.

Rarotonga developed as the Cook Islands’ transport and tourism hub, with accommodation, shops and boat services concentrated along the lagoon and near Avarua. The island’s reef and lagoon shape much of the visitor activity, including snorkeling and small-boat excursions.

Geographically the island lies in the central South Pacific and forms the southern group of the Cook Islands; it is the primary entry point for most international travellers to the nation.

  • Main town: Avarua is the main town and administrative centre located on the north coast, hosting the island's port and many visitor services.
  • Marine access: The island has a fringing reef and lagoon; many visitor activities focus on snorkeling, reef trips and shoreline resorts rather than long-distance hiking.

What to See #

  • Te Manga peak: The island's central peak, Te Manga, rising to approximately 652 metres and forming the volcanic interior that gives the island its steep interior profile.
  • Coastal ring road: A coastal ring road of roughly 32 kilometres that links villages and beaches and is used by drivers and cyclists to circumnavigate the island.

How to Get to Rarotonga #

Rarotonga is served by Rarotonga International Airport (RAR). The airport is a short drive from the island’s main town Avarua (roughly 3-4 km, typically 10-15 minutes by car or taxi). Island buses and shuttle services run clockwise and counterclockwise around the coastal ring road and stop at Avarua and other villages; taxis and rental scooters/cars are also commonly used to reach beaches and accommodation.

Tips for Visiting Rarotonga #

  • Use the island's clockwise and anti‑clockwise public buses to get around cheaply and reliably - they run frequently along the main ring road and are the easiest way to reach villages, markets and beaches without renting a vehicle.
  • Head to Muri Lagoon early in the morning for the calmest water and best snorkeling conditions; many visitors arrive later in the day when wind and boat traffic increase.
  • Spend time in Avarua for local shops and the Punanga Nui market (market days draw local food, crafts and performances) rather than only sticking to resort beaches - it's where you'll find local life and produce.
