Rapel Lake (Embalse Rapel) is a reservoir in Chile’s O’Higgins Region formed by damming the Rapel River. It functions as a hydroelectric and irrigation reservoir and as a recreational water body.
A large inland water body used for boating, fishing and watersports, with lakeside areas developed for leisure and weekend recreation. The reservoir shoreline has beaches and informal camping and boating facilities used by local and regional visitors.
The lake was created when the Rapel River was impounded in the late 1960s as part of a hydroelectric and water-management project for central Chile. Since then it has been used for power generation as well as agricultural water supply and recreation.
Located in the O’Higgins administrative region of central Chile, the reservoir lies inland from the Pacific coast within the Rapel river basin and serves surrounding agricultural districts.
