Randecker Maar

Randecker Maar is a volcanic maar on the Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, notable as both a geological feature and an ecologically important site for migrating birds. The site combines a shallow volcanic crater with open grasslands and wooded rim areas.

Hiking trails run along sections of the crater rim and there are designated observation points and an ornithological station used to monitor migration in spring and autumn. The site is frequented by birdwatchers and naturalists for daytime observation and seasonal counts.

The maar was formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and today is a landscape of crater depression, rim escarpments and secondary soils that support a range of flora and fauna. Scientific interest at the site focuses on both its volcanic origin and its role as a migratory corridor.

Randecker Maar lies on the Swabian Alb escarpment in Baden-Württemberg, roughly on the plateau region southeast of Stuttgart. Access is by local roads and short walks from nearby car parks and village access points.
