Blue Grotto
Cave Coastal sea cave famed for vivid blue waters
Malta’s Blue Grotto draws boat trips into sea caves and swimmers who want clear coastal pools, sheer limestone cliffs and underwater visibility that makes snorkeling and coastal photography popular.
The Blue Grotto is a coastal sea-cave complex on the southern coast of Malta near Qrendi known for intensely blue water caused by sunlight entering the caves. It is a popular short-boat-trip destination for visitors to the island.
Small boat tours enter the largest cave and pass through a series of caverns and arches where sunlight creates striking blue reflections on the water surface. The main grotto and nearby caves are compact but visually distinctive, with visits lasting minutes rather than hours.
The grottoes are natural features formed by marine erosion of the limestone coastline; they have been visited and sketched by travellers for centuries and developed into a regular tourist attraction in the 20th century.
The Blue Grotto sits on the southern coast of Malta near the village of Qrendi, with boat operations based at the small harbour at Wied iż-Żurrieq.
- Best time to visit: Morning light and calm seas produce the strongest blue reflections inside the caves, so boat trips are often recommended early in the day.
- Access: Access to the caves is normally by small licensed boat from the nearby Wied iż-Żurrieq harbour rather than by land entry into the caverns.
What to See #
- Sea caves and bays: A coastal sea-cave group and adjacent sheltered bays formed by cliff erosion, with the most visited cave known for intense blue water reflections when sunlight hits at the right angle.
- Boat launch at Wied iż-Żurrieq: The small launch point at Wied iż-Żurrieq from which licensed local boats run short tours into the caves; launching depends on sea conditions and is weather-dependent.
How to Get to Blue Grotto #
From Valletta and other towns on Malta’s main bus network, take a regular bus toward Żurrieq / Wied iż-Żurrieq and get off at the village; from the village it’s a short 10-15 minute walk down to the cliffside harbour where boat trips leave for the Blue Grotto. By car, follow local coastal roads to the Wied iż-Żurrieq parking/viewing area and then walk to the quay.
Tips for Visiting Blue Grotto #
- Go early in the morning (shortly after boats begin running) and on calm, sunny days-the water's transparency and the sun angle make the cave's famous blue glow strongest then.
- Take the small boats from Wied iż-Żurrieq harbour (the quay) rather than larger tour operators when possible; local boatmen can time the approach for the best light and often offer a slightly longer close-up run.
- If sea conditions are rough or boats are suspended, walk up to the cliff viewpoint above the grotto for dramatic photos and views that many boat-goers miss.
Best Time to Visit Blue Grotto #
Best visited in late spring through early autumn when seas are calmer and boat access to the cave is most reliable.
