Qhapaq Ñan, Andean Road System
Historical Site Extensive Inca road network spanning Andes and territories
Qhapaq Ñan denotes the Inca road system crossing high Andean passes, suspension bridges, and roadside tambos; in Tacna travellers find mountain trails, terraces and stone causeways used historically for administration and relay communication.
Qhapaq Ñan is the vast Andean road system developed and consolidated under the Inca and earlier polities, inscribed as a transnational World Heritage site for its scale and role in pre-colonial administration and movement. The route network links coastal, mountain and jungle regions across South America.
The road network was expanded most intensively in the 15th century under Inca state direction to secure communication, troop movement and economic integration, but it built upon older regional tracks. After the Spanish conquest parts of the system continued in use while other segments fell out of maintenance.
The Qhapaq Ñan crosses six modern countries in the Andes and includes components in the Department of Tacna in southern Peru, where highland routes approach the Pacific slope near the border with Chile.
- Overall length: The network extends across multiple modern states and encompasses roughly 30,000 kilometres of roads and associated infrastructure spanning coastal, highland and jungle environments.
- Chronological scope: While principally associated with the Inca state of the 15th century, many sections incorporate and formalise pre-Inca routes and local infrastructure.
What to See #
- Main road trunk: Extensive road corridors and mountain passes forming the core trunk of the Inca road network that connected highland and coastal regions.
- Ancillary infrastructure: Roadside infrastructure such as tambos (way stations), qollqas (storehouses) and control points that supported movement, administration and supply along the network.
