Parc national des Pyrénées is a protected area in the French Pyrenees created to conserve mountain ecosystems and dramatic glacial landforms. It was established in 1967 and covers a series of high valleys, ridges and cirques along the border with Spain.

The park contains high alpine zones with peaks above 3,000 metres, deep glacial cirques and valleys that are served by a network of marked trails and mountain refuges. Key outdoor activities include day hikes, multi-day treks and wildlife observation in habitats ranging from subalpine meadows to bare rock and ice.

The park was formalised by French authorities in the late 1960s to protect its distinctive landscapes and biodiversity and to regulate access and land use in sensitive high-mountain areas. Management focuses on habitat conservation, maintenance of trail infrastructure and visitor information.

Located in southwestern France in the Pyrenees mountain range near the border with Spain, the park spans high-altitude terrain in the Occitania administrative region. Access points and gateway towns include several small mountain communities and tourist centres in the surrounding valleys.

  • Creation date: Established as a French national park in 1967 to protect high mountain ecosystems and distinctive glacial landforms.
  • Altitude and season: Alpine terrain includes peaks above 3,000 metres and deep glacial cirques; the main visitor season is when mountain routes are free of heavy snow.

What to See #

  • Cirque de Gavarnie: A vast glacial amphitheatre famous for its steep limestone walls and seasonal waterfall, popular with hikers and part of the high Pyrenees landscape.
  • Vignemale: One of the high summits of the Pyrenees rising above 3,000 metres that forms part of the park's alpine zone and glacier-fed valleys.
