Pyrénées - Mont Perdu
Historical Site High mountain massif with limestone cirques and climbing routes
Mont Perdu massif on the Franco-Spanish Pyrenees offers high ridges, deep canyons and glacial cirques; hikers and geologists come for alpine trails, karst landscapes and mountain villages.
Pyrénées - Mont Perdu is a transboundary natural and cultural landscape on the border between Spain and France, inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1997 and centred on the Monte Perdido massif. The massif and its surrounding valleys combine high limestone peaks, deep glacial cirques and extensive mountain meadows.
The current landscape was carved by Quaternary glaciation and has a long history of pastoral use and seasonal shepherding. National park status and cross-border conservation measures were established in the 20th century to protect its geology, biodiversity and traditional land use.
The property straddles the central Pyrenees between Aragon in Spain and the Hautes-Pyrénées region in France. It occupies high mountain terrain and is accessed from valley towns on both sides of the border; nearest regional centres include Huesca on the Spanish side and larger towns in the French Pyrenees.
- Monte Perdido height: The central peak, Monte Perdido, rises to 3,355 metres and is one of the highest limestone massifs in the Pyrenees.
- Trail network: Marked long-distance routes cross the area, including sections of the Pyrenean GR trails, with established mountain refuges for multi-day treks.
