The Pyramid of Cestius is an ancient Roman funerary monument in Rome constructed as the tomb of Gaius Cestius around the late 1st century BC. It is notable for its steep-sided pyramid form faced in white marble and for surviving largely intact.
The monument stands about 36.4 metres tall with a square base roughly 29.4 metres on a side and is faced in Carrara marble. Its striking geometric form and marble cladding make it one of the more instantly recognisable ancient structures in Rome.
Built for Gaius Cestius, a member of the Roman collegium of priests known as the Septemviri Epulonum, the pyramid dates to about 18-12 BC. In the 3rd century AD the structure was incorporated into the Aurelian Walls, which helped protect it from later demolition and reuse.
