Puy de Sancy
Mountain Highest peak of Massif Central, volcanic summit
Puy de Sancy, the Massif Central’s highest summit, offers volcanic domes, marked hiking trails and a small ski area; visitors come for day hikes, broad panoramas and winter sports.
Puy de Sancy is the highest peak of the Massif Central in central France, rising to about 1,886 metres. It is the dominant summit of the Monts Dore volcanic group.
The summit offers panoramic views across the Massif Central and is a short, well-used hiking destination from the nearest lifts and trails. The mountain supports a small ski area with lifts and marked runs on its flanks, and a cable car from Mont-Dore provides easier access to high slopes.
The Puy de Sancy is the remnant of an ancient volcanic complex in the Massif Central. Over time the volcanoes of the Monts Dore eroded to form the current rounded peaks and plateaus used today for pasture, tourism and winter sports.
The mountain sits in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in central France within the Monts Dore range, close to the spa town of Mont-Dore and roughly 40 kilometres south of Clermont-Ferrand by road.
- Access: A cable car links Mont-Dore village to the upper slopes, reducing the ascent by foot for many visitors.
- Viewing: Best views are on clear days; summit visibility can be poor in winter storms so check conditions before attempting the final ascent.
What to See #
- Summit: Summit of the Puy de Sancy reaches an elevation of 1,886 metres and is the highest point in the Massif Central; simple summit plateau with marked footpaths and panoramic views when visibility is good.
- Mont-Dore / ski area: Mont-Dore ski and lift area sits on the mountain's northern slopes and provides winter skiing and year-round cable car access toward the upper slopes.
