Punta Gallinas
Cape Northernmost point of mainland South America, desert landscape
At Colombia’s northernmost mainland tip, Punta Gallinas offers desert dunes, a solitary lighthouse and visits to Wayuu communities on the La Guajira peninsula.
Punta Gallinas is the northernmost point of the South American mainland, located on the La Guajira Peninsula in Colombia’s far north. The headland is noted for its stark desert coastal landscape and traditional Wayuu cultural presence.
The site features a small lighthouse and rocky-sandy coastline set against arid dunes and salt flats. Visitors typically travel to the cape to see the extreme point, local desert scenery and to interact with Wayuu communities in nearby settlements.
Historically the area has been inhabited by the indigenous Wayuu people and has seen limited infrastructure development; access is generally by road from regional towns and often involves guided local transport. The cape lies within La Guajira Department on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.
Punta Gallinas sits at the tip of the Guajira Peninsula, projecting into the Caribbean Sea and forming the northernmost mainland coordinate of South America.
- Geographic significance: Recognised as the northernmost point of mainland South America, the location is remote and visited by guided excursions rather than extensive tourist infrastructure.
What to See #
- Punta Gallinas headland: The cape itself, marked by sandy and rocky desert landscape and a small navigational lighthouse that designates the northernmost point of the South American mainland.
- Local communities and landscape: Nearby Wayuu settlements and salt flats where traditional livelihoods and crafts continue to be practised in the surrounding La Guajira Desert.
How to Get to Punta Gallinas #
Punta Gallinas is at the northern tip of Colombia’s La Guajira peninsula and is reached by off‑road vehicle rather than standard public transport. Visitors normally travel overland by 4x4 from Riohacha or from the nearby town of Uribia on guided tours - expect several hours on rough, unpaved roads across the peninsula.
Because roads are rough and services limited, most travelers join organised tours from Riohacha (the departmental capital) or Uribia; the final approach often involves short walks from the vehicle to the cape and lighthouse.
Tips for Visiting Punta Gallinas #
- Visit at first light or late afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat and to get the best light for photos of the Pilón de Azúcar dune and coastal cliffs.
- Arrange travel with a local 4x4 guide from Uribia or Riohacha rather than attempting to go independently; organized trips are the normal way to reach the remote cape and handle local logistics.
- Consider an overnight stay in a nearby ranchería or campsite instead of a rushed day trip-many day visitors miss extended coastal walks, salt‑flat views and calm evening scenes with far fewer people.
