Punta Gallinas

Punta Gallinas is the northernmost point of the South American mainland, located on the La Guajira Peninsula in Colombia’s far north. The headland is noted for its stark desert coastal landscape and traditional Wayuu cultural presence.

The site features a small lighthouse and rocky-sandy coastline set against arid dunes and salt flats. Visitors typically travel to the cape to see the extreme point, local desert scenery and to interact with Wayuu communities in nearby settlements.

Historically the area has been inhabited by the indigenous Wayuu people and has seen limited infrastructure development; access is generally by road from regional towns and often involves guided local transport. The cape lies within La Guajira Department on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

Punta Gallinas sits at the tip of the Guajira Peninsula, projecting into the Caribbean Sea and forming the northernmost mainland coordinate of South America.
