Pula Cathedral
Church Romanesque cathedral built over ancient Roman forum
Cathedral in Pula built over Roman foundations with a notable bell tower and historic interior; visited for its architecture and tower views over the old town.
Pula Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral in the historic centre of Pula, Istria County, and serves as the seat of the Diocese of Pula. Its origins date to an early Christian basilica, and the building displays architectural elements from multiple periods.
The interior contains the cathedral nave, chapels and furnishings typical of a diocesan cathedral and is visited for its religious function and adjacent archaeological sites, including the Roman Forum and other Roman-era monuments nearby.
The site evolved over many centuries; an early Christian church on the site was rebuilt and enlarged in medieval and early modern periods, producing the mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque features visible today.
The cathedral stands in Pula’s old town, directly beside the city Forum and within walking distance of other major Roman monuments such as the Temple of Augustus.
- Proximity to the Forum: Located immediately adjacent to the Roman Forum in Pula's historic centre, making it easy to visit alongside other Roman remains.
- Ecclesiastical seat: The seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pula with building fabric showing Early Christian, Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements.
What to See #
- Baptistery and bell tower: Surrounding baptistery and bell tower form part of the cathedral complex and reflect earlier phases of construction that predate the present main nave.
