Pula Arena
Archaeological Site Roman amphitheatre among world's best-preserved arenas
Built in the 1st century AD, Pula Arena is one of the Adriatic’s best‑preserved Roman amphitheatres and still hosts concerts and events. Visitors inspect the vaulted corridors, view the arena floor and learn about its gladiatorial and civic history.
Pula Arena is a large Roman amphitheatre located in Pula on the Istrian peninsula, notable as one of the best-preserved ancient arenas in the world. Its outer dimensions are approximately 132 by 105 metres, enclosing an oval arena floor of roughly 68 by 42 metres.
Built in the 1st century AD, the amphitheatre originally hosted gladiatorial combat and public spectacles and was constructed from local limestone in successive phases. Much of the outer wall and seating tiers survive, giving a clear sense of the original scale and design.
Over time the arena was repurposed for medieval fairs, defensive functions and later cultural events; conservation work has aimed to stabilise the stonework and adapt the site for guided visits and performances. The structure stands within Pula’s historic centre, close to other Roman remains and modern urban fabric.
The amphitheatre sits near Pula’s harbour on the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula, a short walk from the city centre and easily reached from regional transport links.
- Events: The arena is one of the most complete surviving Roman amphitheatres and hosts occasional concerts and events in summer, altering visitor access during those times.
