Puig Major

Mountain Mallorca's highest peak, partly restricted by military installations

Mallorca’s highest peak on the Serra de Tramuntana; hikers use nearby trails but summit access is restricted by military installations, while mountain roads provide panoramic views.

Main image

Puig Major is the highest mountain on the island of Mallorca in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and forms a prominent ridge in the island’s northwest.

The summit zone is dominated by radar and military installations, so the actual summit area is normally closed to the public. Hikers and cyclists use the surrounding ridges and passes to access panoramic viewpoints toward the Tramuntana spine and the Mediterranean coast.

The peak is part of the Serra de Tramuntana landscape, which is recognised for its terraced slopes and long north-south ridgeline. The area is popular for mountain walking and road cycling on the passes that run along the range.

Puig Major sits within Mallorca’s interior highlands in the Balearic Islands, forming the highest point of the island chain’s western mountains and visible from many coastal towns when weather is clear.

  • Summit access: The summit area contains restricted installations and is not open to the public, so nearby walking routes and lower ridges are used for viewpoints instead.

How to Get to Puig Major #

Puig Major is in the Serra de Tramuntana on Mallorca and is approached from the Ma-10 coastal/mountain road that runs the length of the range. From Palma de Mallorca the drive via the Ma-13 to the Ma-10 is typically around 45-75 minutes depending on your exact start point and traffic. Note: the actual summit hosts military installations and is within a restricted area and not open to the public; hikers use nearby public trails and viewpoints off the Ma-10.

Tips for Visiting Puig Major #

  • Note that the true summit of Puig Major is fenced off and inaccessible to the public because of the military radar installation; do not attempt to access the fenced summit area.
  • Instead, plan scenic stops along the MA‑10 road and seek out nearby publicly accessible peaks such as Puig de Massanella for summit hikes and unobstructed panoramic views that most visitors find more rewarding.
  • If you drive the Serra de Tramuntana, time your visits for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the busiest tourist traffic on the winding mountain roads.
