Puerta de Alcalá

Puerta de Alcal is a neoclassical triumphal gate standing in Madrid’s Plaza de la Independencia near the east edge of the historic centre. The monument was created in the late 18th century as one of the principal formal entrances to the city.

A stone gate with five openings and sculptural ornament sits at a major junction where Calle de Alcal meets the route to Parque del Retiro, making it a frequent subject for photography and a common meeting point. The immediate plaza provides clear views of the gate from all sides and is surrounded by broad avenues.

The gate was designed and built in the late 18th century under the direction of architect Francesco Sabatini and completed during the reign of King Charles III. It served as one of Madrid’s ceremonial city gates and has been preserved as an urban monument.

Set at the eastern approach to Madrid’s historic centre, the gate stands in Plaza de la Independencia on Calle de Alcal, a short walk from Puerta del Sol and adjacent to the entrance of Parque del Retiro.
