Psara is a small Greek island in the North Aegean, located west of Chios and part of the North Aegean island group. It has a small permanent population and a rugged, rocky coastline with sheltered bays and coves.

The island consists of a main port settlement and an upper traditional village, with local fishing and small-scale tourism forming the backbone of the local economy. Psara is known in Greek history for its maritime contribution to the early 19th-century Greek War of Independence and for suffering a catastrophic attack by Ottoman forces during that conflict.

Over time the island’s population and economy have fluctuated with changing maritime and economic conditions, and today it receives seasonal visitors attracted by its beaches and traditional character.

Geographically Psara lies in the Aegean Sea within the North Aegean administrative region of Greece and is reached by ferry from nearby larger islands and mainland ports.

  • Ferry access: Ferries connect the island to larger Aegean islands and the mainland, with schedules that vary seasonally and are busier in summer.

What to See #

  • Psara Town: The island's main settlement on the sheltered east coast, containing the port, shops and local administration.
  • Chora (Hora): A traditional hillside settlement with narrow streets and local churches that sits above the island's main harbour.

Tips for Visiting Psara #

  • Check ferry timetables before you go and aim for an early arrival-service to Psara is infrequent, so planning outbound and return crossings is essential to avoid an unplanned overnight.
  • Explore beyond the main harbor: the island's inland lanes and small coves are quiet and most day visitors stay only around the port, so walking or renting a small vehicle reveals beaches and traditional villages.
  • Visit outside the peak July-August weeks (May-June or September) if you want fewer crowds and better availability of accommodation and boat trips to secluded beaches.
