Promenade des Anglais
Stream Seafront promenade in Nice lined with palm trees
Along Nice’s Baie des Anges, the Promenade des Anglais runs beside pebble beaches, cycle lanes and seaside cafés; visitors stroll, swim and watch everyday seaside life in the city’s mild climate.
The Promenade des Anglais is a palm-lined waterfront avenue along the Baie des Anges in Nice on the French Riviera, originally laid out in the early 19th century and named for the English visitors who helped develop the seafront. It is one of the city’s principal public spaces and a defining element of Nice’s urban coastline.
The promenade provides continuous pedestrian access along the seafront for roughly 7 kilometres, with public beaches, cycle lanes, hotels and public gardens facing the Mediterranean. Key features include historic hotels, public squares and viewpoints across the bay, and the route is used for leisure, events and city parades.
The promenade was developed in the 19th century with contributions from Nice’s resident English community and expanded over time as the city grew as a tourist destination. Its broad esplanade and seaside character have made it an enduring civic space.
It runs along Nice’s central waterfront from the eastern Quai des États-Unis area past the old town and westward along the bay, immediately adjacent to the city centre in the Alpes-Maritimes department.
- Length and layout: The promenade runs along Nice's Baie des Anges for roughly 7 kilometres and combines beaches, cycle paths and pedestrian walkways for most of its length.
- Best times to visit: Early mornings and late afternoons offer the clearest light for sea views and photography; the promenade is busiest in summer when beaches are open and events take place along the seafront.
What to See #
- Hôtel Negresco: A landmark hotel on the promenade opened in the early 20th century, noted for its Belle Époque façade and prominence on the seafront.
- Place Masséna: The principal public square at the eastern end of the city's main shopping axis, adjacent to the promenade and serving as a transport and meeting point for visitors.
- Quai des États-Unis: The eastern section along the seafront, known as Quai des États-Unis, forms part of the promenade's continuous waterfront route and connects to Nice's old town.

Tips for Visiting Promenade des Anglais #
- Visit the Promenade des Anglais early in the morning for sunrise light and far fewer pedestrians and cyclists, or in the evening for sunset and the seafront lights; mid-day is the busiest time.
- Start your walk from the Vieux Nice (Old Town) end and head west along the seafront to combine the promenade with the market, cafés and then quieter stretches toward the airport; this gives a natural sightseeing sequence.
- For a different perspective, climb Colline du Château (Castle Hill) for an elevated viewpoint over the curve of the Promenade and the pebble beaches-many people miss this short detour.
