Preveli
Religious Site Cretan beach with palm gorge and riverside monastery
South Crete beach and palm gorge where a river reaches the Libyan Sea, backed by a monastery inland; visitors swim, hike the gorge and photograph the palm forest.
Preveli is a coastal locality on the southern coast of Crete notable for a historic monastery, a palm forest, and a small beach where a river reaches the sea. It is one of the island’s better-known southern-coast attractions.
The site combines a compact monastery complex with a palm-covered river mouth and a sandy beach; the palm grove comprises native date palms and is the principal natural highlight. Visitors commonly combine a visit to the monastery with a walk down to the palm grove and beach or a short boat trip along the coast.
The monastery at Preveli has served as a religious complex for centuries and later became well known for its role in local events and community life. The coastal landscape of cliffs, a river gorge, and the palm grove has been shaped by local human use and natural processes over time.
Preveli sits on Crete’s southern shore in the Rethymno regional unit, above a small bay and near the villages of Plakias and other southern-coast settlements. It is accessible by road from the island’s main north-south routes and is a common day-trip destination from towns on the south coast.
- Palm grove: Home to a native Cretan date palm grove - one of the island's best-known concentrations of Phoenix theophrasti - which is a focal point for photography and nature walks.
- Access options: The beach below the grove is commonly accessed either by a steep footpath from the monastery above or by small tourist boats from nearby coastal villages in summer months.
What to See #
- Monastery (Moni Preveli): The historic monastery complex that sits above the palm forest and contains religious buildings and visitor areas associated with the site's monastic heritage.
- Palm grove and beach: The coastal palm forest of native Cretan date palms at the mouth of the river and the adjacent sandy beach reached by footpath or boat from nearby harbours.
- River mouth and gorge: The river gorge and stream channel that runs through the palms to the sea, forming a small estuary and a series of walking routes down to the shoreline.
How to Get to Preveli #
From Rethymno it is roughly a 40-60 minute drive south on the provincial roads to the parking areas above Preveli (about 30-35 km depending on route). From Plakias the drive is shorter, often under 20 minutes. In summer there are seasonal boats from Plakias and Agia Galini that land at the beach; otherwise expect a 20-30 minute walk down a rocky path from the main carpark.
Tips for Visiting Preveli #
- Go early morning to avoid the cramped trail and the summer crowds at the beach
- If not up for the 20-30 minute descent to the shore, take a summer boat from Plakias or Agia Galini to see the palm lagoon from the water
- Bring sturdy shoes - the path to the beach is rock-strewn and can be steep both ways
Best Time to Visit Preveli #
Summer is busiest (July-August) when boat services run and the southern beaches are warm; spring and autumn are best for hiking and quieter visits.
