Praza de Praterías
Monument Medieval square in Santiago de Compostela's cathedral quarter
In Santiago de Compostela, Praza de Praterías sits beside the cathedral’s southern façade and the pilgrims’ routes. Visitors come for the cathedral’s portals, granite arcades, local cafés and the centuries-old pilgrimage architecture.
Praza de Praterías is a compact historic square on the south side of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. The name refers to the medieval silversmiths who once worked around the cathedral.
A stone-paved plaza framed by medieval and baroque buildings, it offers one of the clearest close-up views of the Cathedral’s south façade and its Romanesque details. The scale is intimate, making it a frequent stopping point for pilgrims arriving at the cathedral and for photographers capturing the building’s sculptural work.
The square developed alongside the construction of the cathedral complex between the 11th and 13th centuries, and its layout and name reflect the medieval craftsmen and trades that clustered near the shrine of St James. Over time the area retained its function as part of the cathedral precinct and as a civic space in the old town.
It sits immediately south of the Cathedral in the historic centre of Santiago de Compostela, within easy walking distance of Obradoiro Square and the city’s main pilgrimage routes.
- Best time to visit: Best visited early in the morning when the square and the Cathedral forecourt are far less crowded and light is good for photography.
