Square Large elliptical square with central island and statues

Prato della Valle is a large elliptical public square in the city of Padua, Veneto, Italy, notable as one of the continent’s largest squares with a central island and surrounding canal. Its modern layout dates to the late 18th century when the area was redesigned and embellished.
The square is known for its oval plan surrounding the central Isola Memmia and a broad paved ring lined with statues; there are 78 statues around the peripheral colonnade. Open paved areas accommodate markets, public events and informal recreation across several hectares.
The current layout was driven by Venetian magistrate Andrea Memmo in the late 1700s and executed by architects and sculptors who added the island, canal and statuary ensemble. The site evolved from marshy land and earlier uses into the landscaped civic space completed around the end of the 18th century.
Prato della Valle sits on the western edge of Padua’s historic centre, within walking distance of the city’s main streets and landmarks. It is easily reached from Padua rail station and lies in a flat urban setting surrounded by streets, shops and civic buildings.
- Market days: A large open-air market and periodic events take place here, with the biggest market traditionally on Sundays when the square fills with stalls and crowds.
- Best viewpoints: Good photo viewpoints are from the bridges crossing the canal and from the elevated edges of the oval promenade, especially in morning light.
What to See #
- Isola Memmia: A raised central island known as Isola Memmia occupies the middle of the elliptical space and is surrounded by a paved ring and a canal crossed by several bridges.
- Ring of statues: A ring of 78 classical-style statues of local and national figures lines the outer promenade; most were installed between the late 18th and 19th centuries and follow the oval curvature of the square.
