Praia de Ipanema is a well known urban beach in the Ipanema neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone. The shoreline is approximately 2.6 kilometres long and the beach is internationally famous for its cultural and social scene.
Sandy beach, surf and organized sections divided by numbered lifeguard posts provide spaces for swimming, sunbathing and beach sports. The Arpoador rock at the western end is a popular viewpoint for sunset and for watching surfers.
The beach and the Ipanema neighborhood rose to international prominence in the mid 20th century, a status amplified by the 1962 song “The Girl from Ipanema” by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Over time the area developed as a fashionable residential and leisure district.
Ipanema sits in Rio de Janeiro’s Zona Sul, between the Arpoador headland to the west and Leblon to the east, along the Atlantic coast of the city.

How to Get to Praia de Ipanema #
Ipanema is in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone. From Copacabana it is a 15-25 minute walk along Avenida Atlântica or a short taxi/ride-hail. The nearest metro station is General Osório (Line 1), about 8-12 minutes on foot from the central Posto 9 area. Many visitors arrive by bus along Rua Visconde de Pirajá or by taxi directly to Avenida Vieira Souto.
Tips for Visiting Praia de Ipanema #
- Head to the Posto 9 stretch for a younger, trendier crowd and good people-watching; Posto 10 and beyond are quieter.
- Late afternoon is when the light and the Carioca crowd conspire-bring sunglasses, not expectations of solitude.
- If the goal is the classic photo, stand near Avenida Vieira Souto and look back toward Dois Irmãos at sunset-it's the composition the song made famous.
