Praça Mauá

Praça Mauá is a major waterfront plaza in Rio de Janeiro’s port district, redeveloped as part of the city’s early 21st century urban renewal efforts. It functions as a public promenade and cultural gateway to the port area.

A broad promenade along the bay, public plazas and direct access to museums and cultural venues create a concentrated waterfront attraction. The plaza is commonly used for cultural events and provides views across Guanabara Bay.

The port area around Praça Mauá underwent redevelopment in the 2010s to open the waterfront to pedestrians and to host new cultural infrastructure. Major new museum buildings and restored historic structures were incorporated into the revitalization.

The plaza sits on the shore of Guanabara Bay in Rio’s central port quarter, adjacent to downtown and the historic port neighborhood, with tram and road links to the rest of the city.
