Praça da Liberdade

Praça da Liberdade is a principal public square in the centre of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, historically associated with the state government and civic institutions. It sits at the heart of the city’s administrative and cultural district.

The plaza is edged by notable government-era buildings and parkland and is frequently used for public events, official ceremonies, and pedestrian circulation across downtown Belo Horizonte. It functions as an urban green and meeting space within the planned grid of the city.

The square was established as part of Belo Horizonte’s founding and urban plan at the turn of the 20th century and has long hosted government offices and public functions. In recent decades several of the surrounding historic buildings have been repurposed to house museums and exhibition spaces.

The square lies in downtown Belo Horizonte, within the city’s central administrative area and close to major avenues and public transport lines that connect it with other city neighbourhoods.
