Praça Castro Alves

Praça Castro Alves is a major urban square in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, named for the 19th-century poet Antônio Frederico de Castro Alves. It functions as a principal civic and cultural axis in the city center.

The plaza is anchored by a monument to the poet and is flanked by important cultural and municipal buildings, including the nearby Teatro Castro Alves, which gives the area much of its cultural programming. The square frequently hosts public events, concerts and political gatherings and serves as a transit node between Salvador’s historic districts.

The square was named in honor of Castro Alves (1847-1871), a poet celebrated for his abolitionist and social poetry, and it has evolved into one of Salvador’s main public gathering places. Its role expanded in the 20th century as the city developed cultural institutions around the plaza.

It lies in central Salvador, within the historic core of the city and close to principal thoroughfares and transport links that connect the lower city to other districts.
