Poveglia

Poveglia is a small island in the Venetian Lagoon between Venice and the Lido that gained a reputation for use as a plague quarantine station and later as the site of a 20th-century mental health facility. The island is largely abandoned and has been the subject of archaeological interest and popular folklore.

Historic records show the island was used to isolate and inter bodies during epidemics and later housed medical and institutional facilities; buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries survive in various states of decay. The combination of documented quarantine use and later institutional occupation has given the island notoriety in modern popular culture.

The site is not open for general tourism and access is tightly controlled; archaeological teams and authorised visits are the normal route for any on-site work. Conservation and safety concerns, together with ownership questions, have limited public access.

Poveglia sits in the central Venetian Lagoon, a short boat ride from Venice and the Lido, surrounded by shallow lagoon waters and other inhabited and uninhabited islands.
