Potsdamer Platz

Potsdamer Platz is a central square and busy traffic intersection in the heart of Berlin that was extensively redeveloped after German reunification in the 1990s. It is now a commercial and cultural hub featuring offices, cinemas, shops and public plazas.

The modern ensemble includes the glazed public plaza of the Sony Center, mixed-use towers and retail arcades, and an observation platform on the Kollhoff Tower that gives panoramic views over central Berlin. The area hosts cinemas, restaurants and occasional public events and functions as a major transport and pedestrian node.

Historically the square was a major urban centre before World War II, lay in the Berlin Wall no-man’s land during the Cold War and was the subject of large-scale urban planning after 1989. Redevelopment in the 1990s and early 2000s replaced vacant land with contemporary buildings designed by international architects.

Potsdamer Platz sits between the districts of Mitte and Tiergarten in central Berlin, within easy walking distance of landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Tiergarten. It is well served by public transport including regional rail and U-Bahn lines.
