Portus

Archaeological Site Ancient Roman maritime port and archaeological complex

The ancient maritime hub north of Ostia, Portus preserves extensive Roman harbour remains, warehouses and archaeological trenches that interest visitors of maritime history and urban archaeology.

Main image

Portus is the ancient maritime port complex that served the city of Rome, located at the mouth of the Tiber near modern Fiumicino in Lazio. Construction began under Emperor Claudius in the 1st century AD and the port was substantially expanded by Trajan in the early 2nd century AD.

The site contains remains of the original Claudian harbour works, Trajan’s distinctive hexagonal basin and extensive warehouses, docks and quay structures that made Portus Rome’s principal seaport for grain and goods. The excavated area is extensive and shows large-scale Roman maritime infrastructure rather than a single monumental building.

Claudius initiated the port works in the 1st century AD to provide a safe anchorage for Rome, and Trajan added new basins and harbour facilities in the early 2nd century to increase capacity. The complex remained important through the imperial period and then declined after late antiquity as silting and changing trade patterns reduced its use.

Portus sits on the Tyrrhenian coast just west of the mouth of the Tiber, beside the town of Fiumicino and around 25 kilometres west of central Rome; the excavations lie inland of the modern shoreline at the head of the coastal plain.

  • Visiting tip: Situated near the modern town of Fiumicino and often visited together with Ostia Antica; remains are visible across a broad archaeological park rather than in a compact museum building.

  • Warehouses, docks and ruins: Archaeological remains of warehouses, docks and administrative buildings from the Roman and late-Roman periods, uncovered in the modern excavation area and accessible on-site.
