Belém Tower
Building 16th-century riverside fortification in Lisbon
At the Tagus edge, Belém Tower is a 16th‑century riverside fortification in Manueline style; visitors photograph the stonework, wander the ramparts and combine the stop with nearby maritime monuments.
Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) is a small fortified tower on the northern bank of the Tagus River in the Belém district of Lisbon, built in the early 16th century in the Portuguese Manueline style. It served as part of the river defenses and as a ceremonial gateway during the Age of Discoveries and is a UNESCO World Heritage property.
The tower’s layered stone construction, ornate Manueline sculptural details and riverside location are the main visitor attractions; the fortified rooftop and balconies provide views of the Tagus estuary. Exhibits inside explain the tower’s defensive functions and its role in maritime navigation and exploration.
Commissioned and constructed in the reign of King Manuel I, the tower was both a military structure and a symbol of Portugal’s maritime expansion. It has been conserved and managed as a historic monument and public museum.
The tower stands on the Tagus shore in the Belém district west of central Lisbon, adjacent to other monuments such as the Jerónimos Monastery.
- Date and style: The tower was built in the early 16th century (around 1514-1520) in the Manueline style and originally formed part of Lisbon's river defences and ceremonial gateway to the city.
- Viewing and access: The tower sits at river level and is best photographed from the riverside promenade and the nearby Praça do Império; interior access is ticketed and limited to certain hours.
How to Get to Belém Tower #
Belém Tower lies on the Tagus riverside in the Belém district of Lisbon. From Cais do Sodré take the Cascais suburban train one stop to Belém station, then walk along the river about 10-15 minutes to the tower. Alternatively take tram 15E from Praça do Comércio or Praça da Figueira straight to Belém and walk 5-10 minutes.
By car: the tower is about 6-7 km west of central Lisbon (Baixa) via Avenida da Índia or Marginal; driving typically takes 15-25 minutes depending on traffic, with short walks from nearby parking to the riverside viewpoint.
Tips for Visiting Belém Tower #
- Get there at opening or late afternoon to avoid the huge mid-day cruise-ship crowds that flood the Belém waterfront; the light on the tower at sunrise or sunset also improves photos.
- Approach the tower along the riverside promenade from the Praça do Império for the best photographic angles rather than arriving directly from the street side; this riverside route also avoids some of the main pedestrian churn.
- Buy a timed-entry ticket in advance when available to limit queueing inside the small monument and to ensure entry during busy summer days.
