Main image

Portovenere, the Cinque Terre and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto form a coastal UNESCO site on the Ligurian coast of northwest Italy, noted for its compact historic towns, terraced vineyards and small islands. The area combines maritime, architectural and landscape values shaped over centuries.

Portovenere offers a compact harbor, medieval fortifications and the cliff-top Church of San Pietro, making it a focal point for sightseeing and boat departures to the islands. The Cinque Terre consists of five distinct seaside villages - Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore - famed for steep terraces, colorful houses and short inter-village hikes.

The islands include Palmaria, which is the largest island and has walking paths and coastal views, and the smaller islets Tino and Tinetto, which are largely undeveloped and sparsely vegetated. Boat services and coastal trails offer complementary ways to experience the shoreline, harbors and marine scenery.

The settlements developed over many centuries with medieval and later fortifications and a long tradition of terraced agriculture on steep slopes. The coastal configuration and human modifications such as terraces and harbors reflect sustained maritime and rural land use.

The site sits on the eastern end of the Ligurian coast at the Gulf of La Spezia in Liguria, immediately southwest of the port city of La Spezia. The Cinque Terre villages run along a stretch of steep coastline west of La Spezia, with Portovenere at the gulf’s entrance.

  • Hiking route: A coastal trail known as the Sentiero Azzurro links the Cinque Terre villages over roughly 12 kilometres of coastal path, though some stretches may be closed for maintenance.
  • Transport links: Boat services and local trains connect villages and Portovenere seasonally; ferries provide the quickest way to move between waterfront points and islands.

How to Get to Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto) #

Portovenere and the islands lie on the Gulf of La Spezia in Liguria. The nearest major rail hub is La Spezia Centrale; from La Spezia you can reach Portovenere by local CT buses or by seasonal ferries and boat services (the ferry is the most popular option in spring-autumn). By car Portovenere is a short drive from La Spezia along the coastal road (SP/SS) - drive times are typically around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic - but parking in Portovenere is limited, so many visitors prefer the ferry. Ferries to Palmaria depart from Portovenere’s harbour; the town centre and waterfront are a short walk from the bus or ferry landing.

Tips for Visiting Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto) #

  • Get an early ferry from La Spezia or Lerici to Portovenere to see the village before day-trippers and cruise-ship crowds arrive; morning light is also best for photographing the town and islands.
  • Use the public ferry rather than driving into Portovenere-parking is very limited and the harbour-side docking puts you within easy walking distance of the main sights and boat services to Palmaria.
  • Allocate time to take the short boat or walk over to Palmaria island; most visitors stay in town and miss the island's coastal paths and quieter swimming coves.
