Porticus Octaviae
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman portico adjacent to the Theatre of Marcellus
Porticus Octaviae is an ancient Roman portico near the Theatre of Marcellus and the Jewish Ghetto; visitors inspect surviving columns and arches and explore adjacent archaeological sites and museums.
The Porticus Octaviae is an ancient monumental portico and public complex in Rome, situated between the Roman Forum area and the Theatre of Marcellus. It was associated with the family of Octavia, sister of Augustus, and functioned in antiquity as a combined portico, gallery and temple precinct.
The complex was rebuilt in imperial times after earlier Republican structures and was reused and altered through late antiquity and the medieval period, with surviving ruins that outline the portico, arches and adjacent spaces. Today the remains are visible near the Capitoline and the riverside theatre area, providing an example of Rome’s layered archaeological landscape.
The site lies on the southern side of the historic core of Rome, close to the Tiber and adjacent to the Theatre of Marcellus and other ancient monuments.
