Porticus Aemilia
Monument Ancient Roman port warehouse along the Tiber
An ancient Roman portico and warehouse alongside the Tiber whose archaeological remains draw history enthusiasts and researchers interested in Rome’s commercial infrastructure.
An ancient Roman portico and warehouse complex known as the Porticus Aemilia, originally constructed in the Roman Republic era. It functioned as one of the large riverfront storage and commercial buildings serving Rome’s river trade.
Erected in the 2nd century BC and later rebuilt and repaired in subsequent centuries, it served as a municipal warehouse and storage for goods arriving by river. Over time the structure was altered and partially reused before falling into ruin; archaeological work has exposed sections of the original layout.
