Porta Trigemina
Monument Ancient Roman city gate at the Forum's edge
Porta Trigemina was an ancient gate in Rome’s early city defences associated with the Servian Wall and stood near the Tiber river and the Forum Boarium area. It served as an access point between the riverfront and the city.
In antiquity the gate provided a route for traffic and goods moving between river wharves and urban markets; references to the gate appear in classical sources describing Rome’s early topography. Over time the original gate was demolished or absorbed into later urban redevelopment as the city expanded and its walls were rebuilt or replaced.
The location assigned to Porta Trigemina falls within the area of the ancient city near the Tiber’s bend and the Forum Boarium, now part of Rome’s historic core. Modern streets and archaeological remains in that sector mark where the gate once provided one of the city’s riverfront entrances.
