Porta San Paolo
Building Ancient Roman gate in Rome near Ostiense
One of Rome’s southern gates in the Aurelian Walls, near the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls; Porta San Paolo offers a tangible link to the city’s ancient fortifications and the Via Ostiense.
Porta San Paolo is a gate in Rome’s Aurelian Walls on the city’s southern side, adjacent to the ancient Via Ostiense. The gate takes its name from the nearby Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls and marks the historic route from Rome toward the coast.
The surviving gate structure is part of the larger Aurelian defensive circuit and provides a visible example of Rome’s imperial defensive architecture. The location and access to the old road make it a point of interest for those tracing ancient routes out of the city.
The gate was originally built with the Aurelian Walls in the 3rd century AD and has been modified and repaired in later periods; it also became notable in the 20th century as the site of armed resistance during the events following Italy’s 1943 armistice. Over time the gate shifted from a defensive structure to a historic monument integrated into the modern city.
The gate stands on the southern edge of Rome’s historic centre in the Ostiense area, near the Pyramid of Cestius and the modern Roma Ostiense transport hub, marking the start of the ancient Via Ostiense.
