Porta Palatina
Building Ancient Roman gate and museum in Turin
A Roman city gate flanked by two cylindrical towers on Turin’s Via Garibaldi, Porta Palatina draws visitors for its archaeology, on-site exhibits and proximity to the city’s historic core and cafés.
Porta Palatina is a large Roman city gate in Turin, Piedmont, regarded as one of the better-preserved Roman gateways in Italy. It dates to the Roman imperial period and stands today at the edge of Turin’s historic centre.
The surviving structure includes two substantial cylindrical towers flanking a central entrance and the remains of an inner gate court; an adjacent archaeological area exposes sections of the Roman road and foundations. The scale and survival of both towers and the gateway make the monument a prominent urban landmark.
Constructed by the Romans to control access to the walled city, the gate retained defensive and ceremonial roles in subsequent centuries and experienced repairs and adaptive reuse in the medieval and modern periods. Conservation and archaeological work in the 20th century clarified the Roman layout.
The gate sits in Turin’s city centre in Piazza Cesare Augusto, within easy walking distance of Via Garibaldi and other central streets. It is integrated into the urban fabric and reachable on foot from Turin’s main public-transport hubs.
- Best time to visit: Open-air views are best during daylight; the gate sits in a busy urban square so photographic angles are easier early in the morning.
- Central location: The monument is located within Turin's central grid and is a short walk from Via Garibaldi and other central attractions.
What to See #
- Towers and gate court: Two large cylindrical flanking towers remain on the exterior with a rectangular inner gate court and openings that once led onto the Roman cardo maximus.
- Archaeological area: An excavated archaeological area adjacent to the gate exposes sections of the original Roman road and foundations.
