Porta Nomentana
Monument Former Aurelian Walls gate on Rome's Nomentana road
An entrance on Rome’s northern flank, Porta Nomentana survives in parts and interests visitors studying the Aurelian walls and the old Nomentana road corridor.
Porta Nomentana is a gate in the Aurelian Walls of Rome, located on the Via Nomentana at the northeastern edge of the ancient city. The Aurelian Walls that include this gate date to the late 3rd century AD.
The gate is a fragmentary urban monument visible from street level where the old road meets the city ramparts; the surviving structure is best appreciated as part of the continuous stretch of Aurelian masonry rather than as a stand‑alone attraction. There is no large visitor facility on site.
The gate was incorporated into the city defenses when the Aurelian Walls were built under Emperor Aurelian in the late 3rd century AD and has been altered and repaired at later dates as the city expanded and defensive needs changed. Over time the gate’s function shifted from a principal road entrance to a minor or secondary opening in the modern city fabric.
It stands on the northeastern side of Rome along the historic Via Nomentana, within the modern Municipio I area of the city and a short distance from the contemporary urban neighborhoods north of the city center.
